Currently-Reading Update [July 2017]

I’ve been remiss. Definitely with this blog, but also with reading. Also, two of the books I put in the last update are still on my goodreads ‘currently reading’…it’s a bit embarrassing to make this update, really.

So here are the ones that I’ve been ‘currently reading’ which I actually plan to finish soon (I hope).

A God in Ruins (Kate Atkinson)
This is a sequel to Life After Life, which I reviewed earlier, and the protagonist is Teddy Todd, Ursula’s younger brother. I’m two-thirds through, and enjoying it, it also centres around strange people, strange insights and war, but I’m not (weirdly) finding Teddy as likeable as I should. I get the overwhelming feeling that Atkinson wants the reader to really relate to Teddy and that kind of works against me for some reason. I’m not sure why, I’m trying to figure this one out.

The Little Friend (Donna Tartt)
Tartt’s writing is really addictive to me. I know she’s been compared to Dickens previously which I personally cannot really comprehend because I’ve never had the patience for Dickens, but anyway. I knew this book was probably the least well-received of the three she’s written, and as I read it, I can kind of see why. I’ve temporarily put it aside in favour of others, but I’m hoping to get back to it soonish, time and interest permitting. I think part of it is too many characters being introduced in a kind of mishmash, scenes changing too rapidly. I’m a little bored, I’ll probably have to read back a few pages when I get back to it because I’ve forgotten who we’re talking about. I don’t think this is going to be as successful as her other two for me, but I do want to finish it nonetheless.

Nights at the Circus (Angela Carter)
I’ve been awful with this. I might have restarted it twice. It’s not that I’m bored, I just haven’t had time. I really need to get back to it. I’ll have something to say about it once I’ve actually made a dent in it, hopefully.

I’ve been reading a couple things for class as well which I won’t add, but in other news, I’ve decided to try to make more of an effort (ha), post once a week at least (probably over the weekend, that’s when I find time). And come up with a proper name. Why is that so hard?
